Comparing heat pump quotes: 8 things to check
Two quotes at the same price can hide very different units and installations. Compare them line by line before you sign.
- The RBQ licence. The contractor must hold a Régie du bâtiment du Québec licence. Check the number in the RBQ registry.
- The brand and exact model number of the outdoor unit and each indoor unit. Without model numbers you can't compare quotes or check rebate eligibility.
- Heating capacity in extreme cold. In Quebec, what matters is the capacity delivered at -15 °C and -25 °C, not just the rated capacity. Ask for these figures from the manufacturer's spec sheet, and the minimum operating temperature.
- How the size was chosen. A unit that is too small or too large performs poorly. Ask how the capacity was chosen: site visit, floor area, insulation, windows.
- Rebates. Ask whether the unit is eligible for LogisVert and get it in writing. See our rebates page.
- What the installation includes: wall or ground mount, raised stand for snow, line length, drain, electrical connection and breaker, commissioning, removal of the old unit if any.
- Warranties. Separate the manufacturer's warranty (parts, compressor) from the installer's (labour). Ask how long they last and their conditions, such as registration or yearly maintenance.
- Schedule and payment: installation date, deposit requested and when the balance is due.
